Eritrea, Djibouti: AU Dispatches Experts To Handle Border Row

07 June 2006,Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) A team of experts from the African Union (AU) Commission is in the horn of Africa to discuss the ongoing row between Eritrea and Djibouti, sources said here.

The delegation of the AU team of experts which left Thursday, is led by Ambassador Pierre Yere, a senior advisor at the AU.

It is to be recalled that last month, Djibouti accused Eritrea of entering its territory and digging trenches there.

The Djibouti governments asked in a letter to the AU Commission to intervene in the matter in order prevent any further problems. It was with this background that the AU delegation is visiting Djibouti.

The visit, according to the AU, will last from 5 June to 9 June 2008.

The mission of the Commission will visit Djibouti from 5 to 9 June 2008, to consult with the relevant Djiboutian authorities and assess the situation,” the AU said.

The mission is also mandated to visit Eritrea. However, the AU indicated that the visit to Eritrea will take place as soon as the modalities are agreed up on.
