CUBA, ERITREA Sign Cooperation Agreement
16 March 2007, Havana (Prensa Latina) -- Cuba and Eritrea signed an agreement on general conditions on Thursday to send technical assistance to that african country.
The agreement was penned by Marta Lomas, Cuban minister for Foreign Investment and Economic Collaboration, and Eritrean Public Health Minister Saleh Said Meky, at the conclusion of the Fourth session on economic and scientific-technical cooperation between the two countries.
At the signing ceremony, the Eritrean minister expressed satisfaction with the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in several spheres and described the meeting as successful for both countries.
The visiting delegation also included Agriculture Minister Arefaine Berhe and other officials from the Eritrean Foreign Ministry.
The accord will enhance cooperation in the fields of public health, agriculture, education, fishing and sports, and establishes the permanence of a Cuban medical brigade in the African country, where 59 doctors are already working.
In addition, Cuban professors will continue to teach at the Medical Faculty of Orotta, which was founded in 2003.
Cuban experts will also cooperate in the literacy campaign and the training of teaching personnel in Eritrea.
The Cuban Ministry of Agriculture will send a brigade of experts, mainly veterinarians, and other specialists will work in the sugar and food sectors.
Bilateral cooperation began in 2001, when the first Cuban collaborators arrived in the country. At present, 80 Cubans are working in Eritrea, including 56 doctors and 23 experts in agriculture.
So far, 237 Cubans have rendered their services in that African country.
