Eritrea: Departing US Ambassador Blasts Afewerki's Govt. 04 June 2007 Asmara, Eritrea
In a farewell statement he issued on 2 June 2007 in Asmara, Eritrea, outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Eritrea, Scott H. DeLisi, blasted president Afewerki's one-man, one-party interim government that has been in power for now 16 years in the harshest terms yet. The Ambassador tells it like it is:
"You should know that despite increasing government violations of human rights, civil liberties, economic freedom, and democratic principles, the Government of the United States remains hopeful that one day the Eritrean people will enjoy the rewards of their heroic struggle for independence." said DeLisi referring to the depressing situation in Eritrea under the tyrannical rule of Esayas Afewerki.
"I can assure you that the United States will continue to support the Eritrean people in their quest for true freedom and prosperity." He added.
Addressing the border issue with Ethiopia, "No matter the assertions that appear in the press or in government statements, the United States believes that the ruling must be respected by both parties, must be implemented fully and without conditions, and that the parties must engage each other responsibly in addressing the impact of demarcation on their citizens." Reiterated the Ambassador.
