4 Eritrea players disappear from a soccer event - Report
18 May 2006 (Kenya Times) --Police in the Tanzania are looking for four soccer players from Eritrea who have vanished from their team’s Cecafa camp in the town of Morogoro.
The Al Tahrir FC players were in Morogoro with their team taking part in the ongoing Cecafa Club Cup, which kicked off last week.
The players are Hadish Amhazion, Tesfalidet Abraham Mahanzel, Efrem Dawit Haile and Dawit Berhe.
The team manager, L-Col. Hiruy Bemnet Iyasu, said the players disappeared without their passports after having their breakfast on Wednesday morning.
The Morogoro Regional Police Commander, Steven Ngowi, has asked Al Tahrir to supply them with the players’ photos for use in public notices.
“We can’t stop them from going wherever they want but they could have waited until the end of the tournament,” Iyasu fumed.
The disappearance of the Eritreans has prompted the Morogoro Regional Football Association to place a curfew on all players from Eritrean and Somalian teams at the competition.
The Cecafa Club Cup, which is being played in Morogoro and Dar es Salaam, will finish with the final on 28 May.
SID FC from Djibouti and Police Zanzibar have been eliminated so far after losing their three matches, while the remaining 12 teams are vying for places in the last eight.
Meanwhile Nigeria coach Austin Eguavoen has warned England-based striker Yakubu Ayegbeni that he risks further exclusion from the national side. Eguavoen said the Middlesbrough striker will only have an international future if he is prepared to fight for a place.
“He is outstanding for his club and will continue to be invited to the national side. “But he cannot insist on a place in the team, because no player is guaranteed a shirt in the Super Eagles,” Eguavoen said. Although Ayegbeni insisted he did not do so, Eguavoen said the imposing striker must have a positive change in attitude. |
