ERITREA:
Serfdom Or Freedom?
29
May 2009 Berhane
M Tekeste
 The
landlord of the Estate of Eritrea and serf-master tyrant Isias
Afewarki
Regardless
of how this might sound and is odd or even bizarre, the cruel and
undeniable objective realities in Eritrea even as we speak dictate
this question. The short answer is quite far from and not even
close to freedom, it is an absolute and unequivocal serfdom.
Now
to the long answer. Come the month of May, Eritrea Independence Day
is what comes into the mind of any Eritrean first. Rightfully so
because on May 24, 1991 the former Italian colonial territory Eritrea
re-claimed its national independence that was denied of 50 years
prior and emerged as a politically independent and sovereign nation
without ands and ifs. Yes, then the flag of Eritrea was indeed flying
in every corner of the world sending a very strong signal toward that
effect: The former Italian colonial territory Eritrea, which
territory was later occupied by Ethiopia, is no more, anymore! The
land and territory of Eritrea is free in political, legal, or any
other terms!
But
the inhabitants of this independent and sovereign territory, the
people of Eritrea, are not even close to being free! Eritrea tyrant
turned this free land literally into his private Estate of Eritrea
and its inhabitants into his serfs bound to his and only his will in
every aspect of societal life including asking his permission to move
from point A to point B! No national constitution, parliament, basic
human rights, or elected officials in Eritrea. Tyrant Afewarki
single-handedly picks, hires, and fires at will public officials,
“diplomats”, “Ministers”, “zonal
administrators”, “zonal generals” etc. Like every
landlord, tyrant Afewarki has the last word over every thing that
pertains to his Estate!
The
people of Eritrea are only told not consulted about Afewarki's
decisions or actions- serf-masters don't consult the serfs? Like
serfs, the people of Eritrea have no other option but to concur with
the landlord's decision or whatever he has to say or offer for
rendered labor services!
Afewarki
declares democracy non-existent, the serfs concur! Afewarki dismisses
elections as western conspiracy to divide the people of Eritrea along
vertical differences, the serfs concur! And if Afewarki were to say
2+2=12, serfs would concur too! Whatever tyrant Afewarki says the serfs
concur! Like serfs, the people of Eritrea are there only to render
their labor services however they are compensated for, if any!
Social,
economic, and political emancipation indeed constitute the major
props of freedom. But these are non-existent in Eritrea? In Eritrea,
it is all serfdom under the guise of freedom all the way! It is
befitting to serfdom that the people of Eritrea don't get what they
want, but want what they get! The people of Eritrea don't want
democracy, justice, rule of law, elections, human rights, free press,
etc., that all is freedom, they want what they get: Tyranny! Talk
about freedom!
Let
me say this loud and clear: It is long overdue time for FREEDOM from
tyranny? Help!
