Eritrea:
Who Is EU Trying To Kid Here?
19
September 2009 Editorial
EU
working hand in glove with Eritrea tyrant Isias Afewerki in
perpetuating tyrannical repression in Eritrea
On a day,
yesterday, 18 September 2009, when Eritreans all over the world were
vociferously decrying the 8th
year of the official demise of democracy, the official beginning of
the reign of tyranny, and the arbitrary mass detention, in the
process, of the voices (journalists) and notable top-notch political
forces/personalities of democracy in Eritrea, the EU (European Union)
issued a declaration
urging “ the Government of the State of Eritrea” to
unconditionally release all those jailed for political reasons only
11 days after it (EU) appeased the jailer-in-chief, Eritrea tyrant
Isias Afewarki, with a 122
million planed grant plus 7.26 million Euros petty cash for
emergency situation without any conditions in this or any other
regard such as democracy, human rights, justice, or rule of law! As a
matter of fact following is what EU representative Ms Paolo Amadie
said what EU multi-million Euro grant to Eritrea tyrant is designed
to achieve: “..eradicate poverty and ensure socio-economic
progress ... bring about the desired change in the people’s
standard of living.” No mention of human rights, justice,
democracy or rule of law here for fear of 'antgonizing tyrant Afewarki and hence
jeoperdizing the cooperation between the two parties'!
Now,
who is EU trying to kid here? EU's declaration as good as it might
sound is nothing but a petty lip service designed to play into the
emotions of those calling for the release of all political prisoners
by letting them hear what they want because it bears no sense of
urgency and is totally inconsequential.
If
the EU meant what it says, then it needs to back it up with tangible
consequential measures and actions, which it can but don't want to do
for fear of “closing the door for constructive dialogue and
ruining its policy of engagement” for which as far as democracy, human rights, jutice, and rule of law is concerned, the EU has nothing, absolutely nothing to show for but has a lot to show for as far as propping up and sustaining tyrannical repression in Eritrea is concerned!
Understandable, it is
Realpolitik in action: National interest first, democracy, human
rights, justice, rule of law last! That is why EU is working hand in
glove with certified Eritrea tyrant Isias Afewarki knowing exactly
and well aware of its utterly repressive and inhuman nature and that
by its actions EU is propping up and hence perpetuating tyrannical
repression in Eritrea financially, diplomatically and politically.
Sooner or later, it is inevitable tyranny in Eritrea will end and the
day of reckoning will dawn when EU will have to answer to history!
Ok. EU is entitled to that. All we wish is for EU to treat Eritreans
as human beings with dignity, stop insulting our intelligence and
playing with our emotions.
As
to EU's call for the unconditional release of all political prisoners
in Eritrea, thanks but no thanks! It is a shameless PR ploy and cheap publicity stunt!
