UN
Declares Eritrea Ruler ‘Threat To International Peace &
Security’
27
December 2009 Eritrea Daily
For years, Eritrea
ruler Isias Afewarki dared the UN to it and at long last the UN
delivered loud and clear: Per Resolution
1907 (2009) that was adopted by an overwhelming vote (13-1) on
Wednesday 23rd December, the day I will
always remember, the UN Security Council declared Eritrea's
autocratic ruler Isias Afewarki 'Threat to international peace and
security' and decided to impose sanctions acting under Chapter
VII of UN Charter in order to call Afewarki to order if he would!
The
Security Council took this action upon expressed and written request
of the African Union on behalf of 52 out of its 53 member states!
Resolution
1907 (2009) is no doubt the beginning of Security Council's response
in kind to Eritrea ruler's irresponsible ceaseless mockery of
Security Council's resolutions, authority, and legality as well as
the slandering of Security Council members as “instruments,
tools and puppets of US policy and subservient to US interests ect.”
Well, although it might take quite long, Security Council's
resolutions do have consequences and with Res 1907 Eritrea ruler will
have firsthand taste of it and he will be the first one to attest to
it pretty soon.
Now,
Afewarki will have to deal with a series of sanction regimes with
increasing degree of severity under Chapter VII. The punitive
measures imposed by this resolution against Eritrea ruler constitute
only the initial regime! Succeeding punitive regimes will follow
should this first act not yield the desired effect!
From
the perspective of the victims of Afewarki's tyrannical oppression,
the people of Eritrea, Security Council's punitive action against
Eritrea ruler is a welcome move for any, all, and every thing that
severs the tyrant's lifeline contributes to its demise greatly.
Kudos and great thanks to the African Union and the UN Security Council for adopting Resolution 1907 (2009).
