Eritrea-Djibouti
Border Deal, Is It For Real?
Op-Ed
Eritrea Daily 11 June 2010
In
the absence of some kind of written and expressed confirmation of
Eritrea ruler, Asias Afawarki, is the over-publicized
Eritrea-Djibouti border deal for real?
International
Organizations and international media are all over the
Eritrea-Djibouti deal hailing it and appreciating the efforts of
Qatar. Djibouti, the one party to the deal, issued a statement
yesterday lauding the deal and looking for peaceful relationship with
Eritrea. But there is a deafening silence in the otherwise
trigger-happy quarters of Eritrea ruler in Asmara! The nation has
been kept in the dark. Eritrea ruler's local propaganda machineries
like TV, Radio, Newspapers, websites are all silent! No Word about
Djibouti deal! As a matter of fact, when Eritrea ruler's propaganda
chief was asked by VOA Tigrigna program on Wednesday whether Eritrea
ruler were going to issue a statement in regards the issue at
hand(deny or confirm), he gave well-rehersed automated response to
all inquiries in this matter: “We will not issue any statement
regarding this matter, the Qatari statement is the official statement
in this matter”! Listen here in Tigrigna
But
why is the nation kept in the dark about the Qatari Statement? Why
not broadcast the Qatari statement over local TV, Radio or make it
public in local print media? Djibouti is not hiding behind Qatari
Statement?
In
the absence of any reaction from Eritrea ruler, is the
Eritrea-Djibouti border deal for real or is Eritrea tyrant using it
as a ploy to mitigate the imminent (23 June)UN Secretary General's
report on the matter and mute susequent possible Security Council action? How can a
deal be a deal if one party is silent about it?
If
you got a deal, you got to own it too; one cannot hide behind deal
broker's statement, Eritrea ruler must prove he owns the border deal
with Djibouti one way or the other and express it publicly to the
nation and the international community in no uncertain terms as
Djibouti did? Not done so far!
