Eritrean Lampedusa Survivors Let Move On To Other Countries

22 November 2013

Rome, Italy--- The 89-91 Eritrean survivors of the 3 Oct 13 Lampedusa Massacre that were warmly welcomed in Rome last week, 12 Nov 13, have been let to move on to other European countries.

The survivors left their temporary shelter in Rome on Sunday and Monday in batches to undisclosed European countries including UK, Germany, Sweden, without notifying the respective Italian immigration authorities.

Though the survivors were not required to give notice when and if they leave their temporary shelter, the Italian authorities say they would have appreciated it if notice was given just as a matter of courtesy.

"
in the temporary shelter, the survivors were guests not prisoners, free to leave whenever they wanted" one official of the Social service department added. So, one cannot talk of the survivors fleeing the shelter!

It was also disclosed that the survivors were exempt from what is known as the Dubling Regulation that would have prevented them from applying for political assylum outside the first country that firsted recorded their fingerprints.

The move to Rome has been a happy ending, and this one is a happier ending, Godspeed! For more read report below:
