Commemoration of 1st Anniversary of 3Oct13 Lampedusa Massacre of 369 Eritrean Refugees kicks off

At the time last year, Lampedusa immortalized the 3 Oct 13 massacre of  369 Eritrean refugees by creating a Memomorial Park where a plant was seeded for each victim.

At the 1st Anniversary of that terrible event on 3 October 2014 past weekend, Italy placed a permanent underwater Memorial Plaque, created by the Italian artist Monica Pizzo depicting two outstretched distinct hands one calling for help and the other providing the help, signed by survivors and relatives of the victims at the shipwreck where it all happened.

Watch (video below) members of the Italian Navy that participated in recovering the victims now place the said Memorial Plaque in the presence of the of the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Hon. Laura Boldrini , and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Federica Mogherini :







          
 













On Wednesday, 01 Oct 2014, a few dozen relatives of victims and survivors of the 3 October 2013 shipwreck that brought about the massacre of about 369 Eritrean refugees near the Island of Lampedusa, Italy, met with Pope Francis before heading to Lampedusa for a 3-day, 3 - 5 October 2014, ceremonies to commemorate the 1st Anniversay.
