Eritrea: Sad loss of a committed British Red Cross delegate

Derek Tooke, a British Red Cross delegate working with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Eritrea, has died after his vehicle was caught in a flash flood last Wednesday while crossing a river-bed near the coastal city of Massawa.

Derek, who is from Peterborough, was a highly experienced logistician who had undertaken numerous missions with the ICRC over the past ten years.

John McClure, British Red Cross chairman, has paid tribute to Derek's hard work and commitment: "Derek was well known to many Red Cross colleagues and his commitment to the Red Cross and dedication to the communities he sought to help will be sadly missed by his many friends and colleagues around the world. We extend our deepest sympathies to Derek's family."

His first mission was in Bosnia as a transport specialist and since then he has worked continuously for the ICRC in many countries including Burundi, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sri Lanka, Macedonia and Sudan. He began his one-year mission with the ICRC in Eritrea in January this year, as a logistician assisting the ICRC in providing support to displaced communities.

Derek leaves behind a wife, three grown-up children and five grandchildren.

The ICRC has also paid tribute to Derek, saying: "During all of his missions, Derek demonstrated an excellent understanding of the ICRC's role in the field. He was always available and motivated whenever we requested his services. Thanks to his professionalism, his great determination and his excellent team spirit, Derek gained the respect and appreciation of his colleagues. We express our heartfelt sympathy to his wife, children and friends."
