Corrupt military official sentenced

From press reports

A SENIOR officer with the Slovak Armed Forces was sentenced by the Military District Court in Bratislava to six months in prison and a Sk20,000 (500) fine for accepting a bribe.

The officer, 39, from the General Staff Operations Department, admits that she demanded a $500 (410) bribe from a soldier on a peacekeeping mission in Eritrea who wished to prolong his stay in Africa, the TASR news wire wrote.

The witness in the case is currently engaged in the peacekeeping mission. It was based on his information that the police caught the officer red-handed in January.

She was also found to have meddled in the selection of soldiers for peacekeeping missions and in the prolongation of their stay in such missions. The arrest was carried out by the Interior Ministry's Department for the Fight against Corruption, in cooperation with military intelligence.
