Eritrean authorities arrest Sudanese dissident

ASMARA, April 05 (PANA) -- Against the backdrop of growing differences with their controversial host, the authorities in Eritrea have arrested Sudanese dissident Abdul Aziz Khalid of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), who has been on self exile in Asmara since 1994, press reports indicated here at the weekend.

Retired Brigadier Khalid, who is a communist activist at the head of the armed wing of the NDA, fled to Eritrea ten years ago to coordinate military efforts at toppling the government of President Omar Hassan el-Bashir from abroad.

Of late, though, Eritrean authorities had been investigating allegations that Khalid and two other Sudanese dissidents, Kamal Badr and Ali Yassin were leaking military and intelligence information to Ethiopia.

Eritrea and Ethiopia fought a two-year border war from May 1998 to June 2000 when the two countries agreed to an international arbitration of the dispute, promising to respect the decision to end the conflict in which some 80,000 people were killed.

However, to date they continue to contest the delimitation of their 1,000-km border as decided by the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. - pana
