Sudan says Eritrea's plot accusation "baseless"

Khartoum, 20 Oct 04 - The government spokesman, Al-Zahawi Ibrahim Malik, has said Eritrea's accusation of plotting to assassinate Eritrean President Aferwerki is baseless and an attempt to provoke Sudan and distract it from its crucial issues.

Al-Zahawi told Al-Ra'y al-Amm that Sudan does not interfere in Eritrea's affairs, pointing out that there are good ties between the two peoples . He further said the Eritrean government is the one with agendas against Sudan and expressed his hope that the Naivasha agreement and the dialogue with the [opposition] NDA [National Democratic Alliance] would deal with all [outstanding] loopholes.

He said Eritrea's accusation was aimed at distracting the attention from its bad role in the region. [Passage omitted]
