Eritrea/Ethiopia: Spain adopts UN, EU stance on border issue
MADRID, 7 Jan 2005
(EUROPA PRESS) – The General Directorate of Exterior Communication
(DGCE) issued a communiqué to express Madrid’s willingness to cooperate with
Ethiopia in matters relating to the border ruling in accordance with and based
on the pertinent UN resolutions and most recent Declarations of the Presidency of the European Union (EU) on the
peace process between Eritrea and Ethiopia.
The communiqué was issued in anticipation of the visit of
Ethiopia’s deputy Foreign Minister, Tekeda Alemu, to Spain on Monday.
It is expected that Mr. Alemu will meet with the
secretary of state of Exterior Matters and for Latin America, Bernardino Lion,
and with the secretary general of the Spanish Agency of International
Cooperation, Juan Pablo of the Church.
In line with diplomatic courtesy and civility, the
communiqué also expressed Spain’s cheers for the maxims contained in Ethiopia’s
five-pint plan while at the same time conveying the inviolability of the border
decision, like every one else hitherto.
