The “Consultation on
Partnership on HIV/AIDS in the Horn of Africa: Tracking the epidemic in
post-conflict situations” meeting started on Tuesday in Sana’a. The 3-day event
, organized by the UNAIDS Intercountry Team (ICT) for the Middle East and North
Africa (MENA) and with the support of the Theme Group on HIV/AIDS in Yemen,
aims to develop a broader initiative that would provide a common strategic
framework, pool resources and enhance coordination of efforts to combat
HIV/AIDS in the Horn of Africa.
Minister of Human Rights, Amat Al-Alim al-Suswa, said that while inaugurating
the event that it aims to discuss and debate various issues concerning the
means of curbing the epidemic which is now a major challenge facing the world
community.
The initiative aims, according to a report issued by the organizers, to
“increase access to HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support services among
populations that are vulnerable to the consequences of conflict in the Horn of
Africa. To do so, particular emphasis will be on the reinforcement of
capacities-national, civil society and human actors-to implement HIV/AIDS
interventions in post-conflict situations.”
Yemen, Djibouti, Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan are the target of the
initiative. Yemen Times
