Italo-Eritreans ask for Italian Citizenship
(AGI) - Asmara, Eritrea, July 1 - "They are
non-Italian Italians, because they have been denied full recognition of the
citizenship which they rightfully should have. They are half-casts, i.e. they
have Italian fathers and Eritrean mothers or vice versa. They are relegated to
live their belonging to the white race anonymously, completely assimilated in
the local population and often subordinated.” was the appeal made by Father
Protasio Delfini, president of the study committee of Italian-Eritrean
citizenship, addressed to the minister for Italians in the world, Mirco
Tremaglia, visiting Asmara. The case regards about 200 people who have been
asking for Italian citizenship for years, father Delfini explained. They
havenÂ’t seen their dream come true, even if they have a right to it.
"More time goes by” said the priest, “the more the wait is painful. The
terms of Italian justice, unfortunately are long, too long. And the longer the
wait, the slimmer the list gets, for obvious reasons. Those who die leave their
kids with the consequences of a life wasted in awaiting an impossible dream to
come true”. The response of minister Tremaglia was immediate, having met representatives
of the Italian community during the moring. The government, Tremaglia said, “is
facing the question. There have been sentences in parts of Italy in favour and
in other parts against, such as in Rome. Documentation is difficult to obtain,
even because when your parents are dead it is hard to prove that they were
Italian. It is a complex issue which must be tackled soon and quickly, case by
case”.
