R. Singh to succeed R. Gordon as UNMEE’s new force commander

Nations, New York, 12 July 2004 – An Indian
general will succeed a British one as Force Commander of the United Nations
Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) later this
month, UN Secretary-General Kofi told the Security Council President in a letter made
public today.
In his letter, dated
6 July, Mr. Annan said Maj. Gen. Robert Gordon had served as Force Commander,
with “exemplary dedication and professionalism” since 1 November 2002 and his
tour of duty was ending.
In an exchange of letters, Mr. Annan and the Council agreed
on the appointment of Maj. Gen. Rajender Singh of India as UNMEE’s next Force
Commander. “He is expected arrive in the mission area in the second half of
July 2004,” Mr. Annan said.
