Sudan: Opposition condemns foreign intervention in Darfur crisis
_______________________________________________________________________________

Khartoum, 23 Jul 04 - The opposition [Islamist] Popular National Congress [PNC] has urged the government and gunmen in Darfur to solve the Darfur issue through dialogue so that it may not open doors for incitement and foreign interference, which would bring disaster to the country.

A PNC leader, Muhammad al-Husayn al-Amin, called on the government to prepare an atmosphere for dialogue by releasing Darfur prisoners and the remaining political forces who were accused of supporting the events in Darfur.

He denied that his party had a hand in the Darfur crisis or had signed an agreement with any side during the talks it is holding at present with the Sudanese political forces and the government in Asmara [Eritrea].

Al-Amin told Al-Sahafah yesterday that the authorities had, two days ago, released three detainees from his party as well as 12 others previously. He said that the leader of the party, Hasan al-Turabi, and 50 others were still in detention. He said that he [Al-Turabi] was in good health. He urged the government to allow the authorities to let their families visit them.

Al-Amin affirmed that the PNC rejected violence and vowed not to use it to achieve its political aims despite the government's attempts to prove the opposite.

He held the government responsible for what was taking place in Darfur by refusing to solve tyranny. He said that the government was paying the price of its mistakes in Darfur. However, it still had a chance to bring political forces together to solve the crisis so that foreign forces do not intervene.

Al-Amin condemned the USA's threats [of sanctions over Darfur], pointing out that his party rejected the intervention of any foreign force in Sudan. [Passage omitted]
