Gaddafi in Eritrea: The Tale Of Two Loving Tyrants

9 February 2009

Gadaffi Afawarki

Just how close is the friendship between Eritrea tyrant Isias Afawarki and Libya tyrant Colonel Muammar Gaddafi? Well, it is as close as it could physically be (no pun intended). I mean there was a lot of holding hands and bear hugs (no pun intended again). They took a leisurely walk along the beautiful shores of the Eritrean red sea port of Massawa holding hands and gave each other a bear hug upon arrival and departure! Nothing known about firm hand shakes, though? It looked like as if this were a case of two people that had so much in common for so long who had met again for the first time after missing each other for a very very long time ! They appeared to be inseparable!

Reportedly, 'Brother Leader Muammar Al-Khadafi' was in Eritrea over the weekend, 6-8 Feb., on a working visit following the conclusion of AU summit meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he was elected the year's chairman of the organization. Nothing wrong with that.

What got me hitting the keyboard of my pc again is the timing, February, of his visit and the place of his sojourn, city of Massawa : A week before the date when we Eritreans celebrate Operation Fenkl, 13 Feb. 90, the day the port city of Massawa was liberated after Gaddafi sided with yet another tyrant, Mengistu of Ethiopia, to help carpet-bomb Massawa in 1977. At the time Gaddafi's bigoted and insane tyrannical rationale was that “since there are more Muslims in Ethiopia than in Eritrea, it is natural for him to side with tyrannical Ethiopia”.

Afawarki picked Massawa not to remind Gaddafi about that, ask for reparations, apology, or to lay a bouquet of flowers on the graves of the victims of Gaddafi's acts, or to address the people of Massawa. To the contrary, Afawarki has damned the city and people of Massawa to cheer and gleefully welcome the person who contributed to the carpet bombing of their city. What does Afawarki care? Afawarki is not at all about that. He barred himself from the AU. Consequently he was suffering from a self-inflicted pain of being isolated after being shut out from the AU summit. He was looking for a pain reliever for that, which he found in Gaddafi's visit. And where else to enjoy this wonderful pain reliever at best than the beautiful beaches of the port city of Massawa!

Beyond that, it is a plane case of one tyrant returning the favor of another tyrant at a time of isolation. Gaddafi is returning Afewarkis favor for defying UN air embargo against Libya and flying into Tripoli in September 1998.

Just a humble pointer: Gaddafi came to power via coup d'état in 1969 now 40 years tyrant, Afawarki now reaching 18 years! End of the tale of two tyrants.

Gaddafi and Afewarki, two loving tyrants with perfectly matching style and outfit taking a leisurely walk along the beaches of Massawa holding hands. How romantic!

Gaddafi, Afawarki in a bear hug. Couldn't get any tighter? Inseparable! Some one has got to let go, though!

Musical reminder of the massacre of the people and the bombardment of the city of Massawa in 1977 with the help of Gaddafi?
