Shalom: Eritrea to open diplomatic mission in Israel
Jun. 21, 2004

By JPOST.COM STAFF

Eritrea is to open a diplomatic mission in Israel, according to Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom.

Shalom, quoted on Israel Radio, told the Knesset foreign affairs and defense committee that he had received an official message from the Eritrean government announcing their intent to open the embassy.

Israel opened an embassy in Eritrea in 1993, two years after the African state achieved independence.

With a population of 50 percent Muslims, Eritrea is an observer in the Arab League and is located strategically, bordering Ethiopia and Sudan with the red Sea to its North.

This marks the first embassy to be opened in Israel in more than four years.
