Eritrean wanted for bank robbery in Norway caught

Metkel Negassie Betew, the suspect in the Norsk Kontantservice (NOKAS) cash transport service bank robbery in Stavanger last month, was arrested on Tuesday just a day after police released his name and photos to the public. Betew was stopped at passport control at Frankfurt Airport, traveling under his real name, newspaper VG reports.

German police immediately arrested Betew, 25, who landed at the giant German airport on Tuesday morning on a flight from Asmara, Eritrea.

"We still do not know where - or if - the suspect had intended to travel on from Frankfurt," said police inspector Ernst Rossebø of Rogaland police.

The 25-year-old, a Norwegian citizen of Eritrean origin, is believed to have played a key role in the brutal robbery, which not only was one of the most ambitious ever seen in Norway, but also resulted in the death of a police officer.

Rogaland police said they were now concentrating on having Betew extradited to Norway.
